Roster Release, Open House, Sunday Blues

On Saturday morning, the TinCaps Opening Day roster was released, and from just about everyone’s initial reactions, this has the chance to be quite a talented ball club.

Here’s what TinCaps president Mike Nutter told LaMond Pope in The Journal Gazette:

“There’s one of these websites that does Padres prospects that put something out the other day that says this is the most prospect-laden team roster at any level that he could remember,” Nutter said. “And he’s been covering it for 15 or 20 years.”

If you want to see video of Manager Jose Valentin, Hitting Coach Jacque Jones and catcher Austin Hedges, check out this story by INC’s Dean Pantazi.

The TinCaps will open the season with five of the top 30 prospects in the Padres organization according to Baseball America. There are also four players who were selected by the Padres in either the first round or the supplemental round of the draft, three of those being in 2011.

The three 2011 picks I just mentioned are pitchers Joe Ross and Michael Kelly, and infielder Jace Peterson. The fourth first-round pick is a name TinCaps fans are sure to be familiar with: Donavan Tate. He was taken third overall in the 2009 draft, and played in just six games with the TinCaps last season before suffering an injury and missing most of the season.

Another name you’re sure to hear a lot about is second-round selection Austin Hedges. He was in high school at this time last year, but come Thursday, he’s likely to be the starting catcher for Fort Wayne as the team welcomes Lake County to Parkview Field.

In related news, the team arrives in Fort Wayne today. They’ll have media day tomorrow as the local media will get their first chance to talk with the players in the locker room, and work out a few times at the field before getting things underway on Thursday. Lots more coverage to come in relation to all of those happenings right here on the blog.

Parkview Field Open House

Saturday was the Open House at Parkview Field for fans. The two-hour event allowed folks to come in, take some swings down on the field, sample concessions items, and get a behind the scenes tour of the stadium.

Here’s a news story, courtesy of WANE-TV about Saturday’s event:

It was also a day for TinStaff (I just made that up) to dot I’s and cross T’s by putting fresh paint where it was needed, sweeping and cleaning, and for me, making sure the seats on the upper level of the stadium were nice and clean.

It was a great feeling to see so many fans in the ballpark, and I’m looking forward to having that atmosphere again many, many times throughout the season.

I really enjoy using Pandora, and one of my favorite channels is the “Blues Guitar Legends” station. Especially because it’s Sunday, that channel feels entirely fitting. If you’re a public radio listener (Happy 65th birthday to the first station I ever worked at, WAER), as I am, you’ll know that there are blues shows aplenty nationwide on Sunday. I always enjoy catching those on while I’m out for a drive. (Don’t forget Car Talk and Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! Gotta love those, too.)

So, I heard this song today, and I would like to make a long distance dedication to the game of baseball:
